Chinese Suspect Arrested in Bangkok After Paying 100,000 Baht to Enter Thailand Illegally

A Chinese man has been arrested in Bangkok after reportedly paying 100,000 baht to be smuggled into Thailand illegally by boat across a river from Laos. Immigration officers detained him at a restaurant in the RCA entertainment district after receiving a tip-off about foreigners believed to have entered the country without permission.

The suspect, 37-year-old Chang Ping, was arrested on Saturday, October 17, by investigators from the Immigration Bureau's Investigation Division. Officers had gone to the restaurant in Bangkok's Huai Khwang district after being told that undocumented foreigners were gathering there.

When officers approached him, Chang could not produce a passport or any other travel document. A check of the Immigration Bureau's database found no record of him entering Thailand through an official checkpoint.

Speaking through an interpreter, Chang reportedly admitted that he had crossed the Thai-Lao border illegally by boat. He said he had contacted people on Telegram who arranged his transport and helped him along the way, and that he paid about 100,000 baht for the arrangement.

Further checks reportedly turned up information from Chinese security agencies linking Chang to suspected telecommunications and online fraud. Chinese officials are said to want him for legal proceedings, but Thai investigators are still verifying those details. Police have not confirmed whether an arrest warrant has been issued in China or shared any information about the alleged fraud case.

Chang has been handed over to Immigration Bureau investigators to face proceedings over his illegal entry. Immigration Bureau Commissioner Police Lieutenant General Nopphasin Poonsawat has also ordered officers to track down everyone involved in arranging the journey, including boat operators, drivers and intermediaries who received payment.

Investigators are now examining whether a wider smuggling network is helping foreigners wanted overseas enter Thailand and get around immigration checks. The investigation is ongoing.
